It is historically significant as one of the two regions of the world (along with the Nile river valley) where early communities could take advantage of a natural water supply for irrigation of crops. The first large urban societies (larger than earlier Neolithic villages) developed in this region, as a result of the increased agricultural production only possible through irrigation. These cities, including Lagash, Uruk, Kish, Ur, and others were settled by the Sumerians, and later dominated by the regional empires of the Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians.”
