Appalachian Mountains

Appalachian Mountains
The Appalachian Mountains formed about 250 million years ago from a collision of North America with Africa that contributed to the formation of the supercontinent Pangaea. The slow ?crash? rumpled both plates, creating the Appalachians on our side, and the Atlas Mtns in Africa. Next, Pangaea broke apart, and North America and Africa were carried away from each other, and the Atlantic Ocean opened between them. Open the Chapter 11 PowerPoint and go to the slide titled ?Pangaea Animation? to view the breakup of Pangaea. This animation chronicles the past 200 million years of plate movement, and projects plate motion 50 million years into the future. (NOTE: to view the animations, you need to watch the powerpoint as a slide show. If the powerpoint animation does not play for you, visit http://geology-guy.com/teaching/iac/animations/pangaea.htm
a. Describe major changes in continental positions in the past 200 million years. Be specific (100 words)
b. Consider the trends for the next 50 million years. Select a location that starts with the first letter of your last name (for example, I could choose Lagos, Liberia, Los Angeles, Lithuania? since my last name begins with the letter ?L?). Your task is to describe (100 words minimum) how plate tectonics will impact this location 50 million years from now (look at the animation!!). Consider location, climate and the potential impact to this locations economy.
