English Literature

English Literature
You must write a two- to three-page paper explicating a poem. To explicate a poem, you need to talk about both what the words themselves mean, and how that creates meaning in the poem, and how the form of the poem creates meaning in the poem. Form includes rhyme pattern, rhythm, any poetic devices (repetition, imagery, alliteration, etc.).
You must use lines from the poem to show what you are saying. Those lines must be cited.
Here are the poems and questions form which you can choose:
1. Read “Thanks” by W. S. Merwin (the poem is here.) Is the speaker giving genuine thanks or are the “thanks” ironic? How do you know?
2. Shakespeare’s sonnets numbered 130 and 18 are both about someone’s beauty, but do they both express the same kind of feeling for that person? How does the speaker feel about each person in the poems? (These are both on Blackboard under “Sonnets”.)
3. Read “Pescadero” by Mark Doty. (You can find this poem here.) The speaker seems comforted by the goat’s presence–why? What about the goat is comforting?
