Assignment

Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” reveals the dangers of unquestioned
assumptions. In an essay of three to four pages, argue that the story shows
that unquestioned assumptions, especially when shared by a community,
are difficult to change.
In your discussion, show why assumptions are difficult to challenge.
Purpose

Your purpose is twofold. First, you will think about the nature of
assumptions that our culture accepts, and their consequences. Also, you
will enlighten your readers by revealing the rich symbolic content of “The
Lottery.” As usual, you should tell us something we may not have noticed
after reading the story
