History of a specific location in New York

History of a specific location in New York
To what extent can we uncover New York’s hidden history by focusing on changes in its physical landscape? Underneath every new construction or renovated space is a multi-layered story, tied to the site and the people who once inhabited it. For this assignment, you will need to find a piece of forgotten New York history: an object, location, building, neighborhood, etc. that no longer serves its original function (or seems to serve no function at all). Research the history of the object (through ProQuest historical newspapers and other first-hand and secondhand sources). Write an essay in which you make an argument about the object’s survival: what does it say about the particular location, and the city as a whole, that this object still exists?
