The Ghost Dance: Ethnohistory and Revitalization
Paper instructions:
Alice Kehoe writes in her preface to The Ghost Dance: Ethnohistory and Revitalization, “By using examples from American Indian history, up to the present resurgence of Indian populations, this book will add to a student’s knowledge of present-day America” (p. xvii). What does the author mean by this statement? In other words, how has the book added to your knowledge? Read the Preface and Chapters 1-3 on the Ghost Dance itself, then one of the following chapters (4-10):

Ch. 5 Black Elk Speaks
Ch. 6 Wounded Knee Again

Social Science Perspectives: Comparisons with the Ghost Dance

Ch. 9 Deprivation and the Ghost Dance
Ch. 10 Revitalization
Objective: To think about the effects of American Indian revitalization movements as well as relations between American Indians and European Americans, both historically and today.
Technicalities:
Include your name, the date, and your section number (single-spaced)
Title your paper “The Ghost Dance: x,” where x is the chapter you used from chapters 4-10.
Write 1-2 pages, double-spaced. 300 word minimum.
Cite page references for quotes from Kehoe in your paper, in parentheses at the end of a sentence. Example: “Jack Wilson was a prophet of peace” (p. 13). Don’t quote more than 2 lines. No bibliography needed.
Warning: Passages copied from Kehoe and not cited will be considered plagiarism: essay and class participation grade will be 0. Don’t cheat, I know the book well!
