Instruction
Select and analyze 2 news articles that report on issues in the global political economy (such as international trade disputes, issues on free trade agreements, role of multinational companies in developing countries, role of government in promoting international trade and investment) from the perspectives of the contending theories in IPE.
In your analysis for each article, you should 1) briefly summarize the main idea of the article, 2) identify atheory that is most suitable in helping you understand the article’s content, 3) briefly discuss the main assumptions of that theory (only the parts that are most relevant to the context would be fine) and point out examples of those assumptions in the article in detail, and 4) pick another contending IPE theory to offer an alternative argument or explanation. You also need to briefly discuss this second theory’s main assumptions and point out examples of those assumptions in the news.
This assignment looks for your ability to apply your knowledge of the contending theories in IPE to real issues in the global political economy. Evaluation will be based on the followings.
1) The quality of your news selection (IPE-related articles with clear issues).
2) Concise and accurate summaries.
3) Ability to choose a suitable theoretical framework that helps explain each article, a relevant discussion of theoretical assumptions, and perceptive identification of theoretical traits in the articles.
4) Ability to use another contending theory to provide an alternative explanation.
5) Good organization and ability to write persuasively and coherently.
