native american and education
Individually, you are to construct an argumentative essay about the deculturalization and struggle for equality of this minority group. In essence, you are defending Spring?s thesis. If you don?t agree with Spring, fine- but you will have to make a solid case with researched, supporting evidence. Spring?s book should be the major work cited for most of the minority groups listed below, but you can also use other sources that support your thesis. You are to use APA formatting.
An argumentative essay is a ?genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.? (https:owl.english.purdue.edu).
The structure of the essay is the following:
? An introductory paragraph that speaks to the historical background (perspective) of the minority group ( why they came to America, when they came, where did they come from, what was happening in America when they came, what did American education/schools look like at the time of their arrival in the US.. )
? A second ?introductory paragraph? should speak to the problems/issues the dominant culture ?had? with this group. These issues should help you form a clear and concise thesis statement about why this minority group was deculturalized and discriminated against in American schools.
? 3- 5 main idea paragraphs that include evidence that supports your thesis
? Clear counterargument(s) to your thesis
? A conclusion that synthesizes all the evidence that you collected to support your thesis. You should ?restate why the topic is important, review the main points and review your thesis.?
