Film or TV Series Analysis for Principles of Sociology
The goal of this assignment is for you to use your sociological imagination to critically assess or analyze what you identified as one of your favorite movies (i.e. the movie or TV series you identified on your name card or another movie or TV series of your choice). This assignment should demonstrate an application of sociological concepts in a thoughtful, well-written discussion.
View the film. Write an essay in which you thoroughly discuss how the movie illustrates at least three sociological concepts covered in my lectures or that you have found in the textbook. The majority of the paper must focus on the analysis rather than a summary of the film or TV series’ plot. This paper should identify each sociological concept and how you believe relates to your movie. You should also make it clear how each concept is illustrated in the movie.
Paper Format:three (3) pages, typed, double spaced, 12 pt., 1 inch margins, numbered pages, stapled, name on paper.
I. Introduction (identify the movie you are analyzing, and identify the three concepts you will discuss- this should be done in one paragraph)
II. Plot Summary (one paragraph – no more). Describe/summarize the film or TV series—the setting, the main theme or themes, the main character(s) – imagine that I have never seen the film or TV series and tell me about it
Sociological Concepts( major part of the paper)
• Name and define the concepts you will use for your analysis (use your textbook)
• Explain how the film or TV series illustrates each concept…give concrete examples
• Evaluate the use of each concept – was it presented fairly? Explain.
• You can also frame your analysis within one of the theories we have been discussing (conflict, interactionist, functionalist). For example, does the film’s or TV series’ theme(s) deal with the struggle between the powerful and the powerless (conflict theory); or does it mainly address social interactions and behaviors and their meaning (interactionist theory); or, is it about a social institution (see your textbook) and how it functions within society (functionalism)? Or did the film or TV series cover racism, sexism, social class, etc?
• YOU CAN USE THE STUDY GUIDES AS A POSSIBLE SOURCE OF CONCEPTS AND TERMS FOR YOUR PAPER.
Example:
Sociological Concepts (ethnocentrism, culture shock, social class,)
What does your film or TV series say about this concept?
What specific behaviors, activities, events, etc. in your film or TV series illustrate this concept? Provide examples
How did the film or TV series increase your understanding of this concept?
Here are some questions to think about while preparing to write your essay.
In what ways does the film or TV serieschallenge you?
Were there specific themes or ideas the film or TV series was trying to present?
What social messages were used to convey these ideas?
The answers to these questions don’t necessarily have to appear explicitly in your essay. You don’t need to be a “film or TV critic” to complete this assignment successfully. Write up your observations in your own words, in such a way that even a person who has not seen the same film can visualize or imagine what you noticed.
